This 3-hour introductory course, designed by HERSANA, provides a comprehensive foundation for professionals and practitioners working with girls, women and femmes who are at risk of or have been subjected to Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C).

FGM/C is a harmful practice rooted in gender inequality and control over bodily autonomy, with deep social, cultural and historical significance in many communities. While it is often framed as a "cultural issue," this training reframes FGM/C as a form of gender-based violence and child abuse, examining its physical, psychological, sexual and reproductive impacts, both immediate and long-term.

This course also equips participants with the skills to identify risk, respond appropriately and sensitively and navigate safeguarding responsibilities with cultural awareness, confidence and survivor-centred care. It highlights how to support those affected without pathologising their culture or communities — ensuring protection without prejudice.
